TRASH
Paper Collage, Screen Print
Fall 2023
The Goal
Find solutions to build images from physical
media, providing a negative impact on personal
waste.
Each image will use garbage previously
accumulated.
Each image will work as a piece on
it’s own, as well as with the greater whole.
Solution One
Five images built using movie theatre posters from
the artist’s garage, cut to collect color and texture.
Solution Two
Five images built using collected pizza boxes,
screen printed with vegetable oil.
SOLUTION ONE
PROCESS
My wife and I met while I was working at a movie theatre in 2006. She would eventually work there too, and when that theatre closed we kept hundrends of posters that had been stored in a closet there. That collection has since lived in our closet and has moved with us, from place to place, for over a decade. When it had come time to remove these items from our home, I decided to give them a second life and use them for this project.
In the midst of cutting things down. Still unsure of the direction things were going, I figured I would keep as much text as possible for my personal collection.

SOLUTION TWO
PROCESS
At the time of this project, I lived in a house with 7 people. On a Sunday evening, while taking the garbage to the curb, I was moderately impressed by the stack of pizza boxes that had accumulated at the top of the bin. It struck me that this image had become a regular part of adult life in my late 30s. This version of the American Dream, cheap pizza and communal living, was not something that had been
proselytized at my induction to the work force.
Cutting pizza boxes down to size.
Drawing the text on a transparency to be burned to screen printing.
Screen burned and ready for printing.
